Sue Kim, the daughter of Korean immigrants, embarked on a remarkable journey, shaped by her experiences growing up in Detroit, Michigan. Her academic pursuits took her to the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a degree in English Literature. Undeterred by the conventional path, Kim continued her education, obtaining a second degree in graphic design. She then ventured into the music industry, running an independent record label before transitioning to the advertising sector.
For nearly two decades, Kim excelled as a commercial producer, creating award-winning content for renowned brands such as Nike and Adidas. Her impressive portfolio laid the groundwork for a successful pivot to directing nonfiction films. In 2020, her documentary short, The Speed Cubers, premiered on Netflix, garnering widespread acclaim and numerous award nominations, including a Critics Choice award, a Peabody award, and a shortlisting for an Academy Award in 2021.
Currently, Kim resides in Portland, Oregon, with her son, Asher, a world-ranked competitive speed cuber. She is actively involved in production on a documentary series and a documentary feature, both set to debut on Apple+ TV in 2023.
