Biography

Stuart Schulberg, the son of renowned producer and studio executive B.P. Schulberg, and younger brother of celebrated novelist and screenwriter Budd Schulberg, was born in the vibrant city of Los Angeles. He pursued his academic endeavors at the prestigious University of Chicago.

Following World War II, Schulberg played a crucial role in producing films for the U.S. government's Marshall Plan, a program aimed at rebuilding and revitalizing war-torn Europe. His impressive work in this field led to his involvement in the production of two feature films, "No Way Back" and "Special Delivery," both of which received critical acclaim. The former, in particular, was honored as the best West German film in 1954.

In October 1956, Schulberg joined forces with his brother Budd to form Schulberg Productions, Inc., a production company that went on to produce the critically acclaimed film "Wind Across the Everglades" in 1958.

Schulberg's professional journey continued to unfold as he joined NBC Television in 1961 as a co-producer of David Brinkley's Journal. His exceptional work in this role earned him a promotion to producer of NBC's "Sports in Action" in 1965.

However, Schulberg's passion for documentary filmmaking soon led him to embark on an independent project, "The Angry Voices of Watts," in 1966, followed by "The New Voices of Watts" in 1968. These projects not only showcased his versatility as a producer but also demonstrated his commitment to telling powerful stories that mattered.

In 1976, Schulberg returned to NBC, where he served as the producer of the iconic "Today Show" until his departure. Notably, both Stuart and his brother Budd Schulberg received Emmy nominations for their work on "The Angry Voices of Watts."
