Born Steven Lawrence, Elder grew up in Rotherham, England, as the son of Clifford Lawrence, a former coal-miner and professional boxer, and Margaret Barlow. He received his early education at the Valley Comprehensive School in Worksop, England, before pursuing higher education at the University of London.
