Stevan Filipovic's directorial career began with his first feature film, Shaitan's Warrior (Sejtanov ratnik),released in 2006. This genre-bending film, which combined elements from 80's flicks and contemporary fantasy cinema, was met with critical acclaim and commercial success. It was screened at numerous film festivals worldwide, including the Peter Jackson's WETA Workshop in New Zealand, and won the Grand Prix at the Grossmann Fantasy Film Festival in Slovenia.
Filipovic's next film, Skinning (Sisanje),was a political drama that tackled the issue of extreme right-wing hooligans in Serbia. Released in 2010, it became the biggest domestic box office hit that year, attracting over 80,000 admissions in Serbia. The film won major awards at all Serbian film festivals and was screened at more than 20 international festivals, including the UK and Germany. Skinning was also part of a wider campaign against violence and fascism in Serbia, and was screened in the British Parliament and Oxford University.
In 2012, Filipovic edited Maja Milos's film Clip (Klip),which won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam FF. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the film Dobra zena (A Good Wife),which premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Filipovic's third film as a director, Next to Me (Pored mene),was released in 2013. It had its world premiere at the 62nd Pula Film Festival in Croatia, where it won the Golden Arena award for best film in the international program. The film also screened at the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival, where it won the Young Audience Award, and at more than 20 other international festivals. Next to Me received favorable reviews from publications such as the Hollywood Reporter, Screen Daily, Cineuropa, and Variety, and attracted over 81,000 viewers in cinemas, making it the number one box office hit of the season.
Filipovic's next project, Heart of Darkness, is a Serbian/French/Belgian co-production that he wrote and directed. The film received financial support from the Creative Europe Media program for development.
In addition to his work in film, Filipovic has also been involved in television. He directed the pilot and three episodes of the Serbian remake of the WB Television series ER.
As a writer, Filipovic has contributed to Serbia's premium left-wing political web portal, Pescanik, and newspaper Danas. He has also been recognized for his work, winning the Coalition Against Discrimination annual award for 2012.
Filipovic holds a tenure as a Professor of Editing and Visual Effects at the Academy of Arts, Belgrade.
