Biography

Shura Lipovsky is a renowned singer of Yiddish/Jewish songs, hailing from the Netherlands. Born and raised in Rotterdam, she studied singing at the city's conservatory, where she was mentored by the esteemed Margaret Honig. Additionally, she honed her skills in Yiddish with Mira Rafalowicz and furthered her education at New York University, Oxford Summer University, and La Maison de la Culture Yiddish/Bibliothèque Medem in Paris.

Her artistic journey continued as she explored dance at the Dutch Institute for Folkloristic Dancing, L.C.A. Combining her passion for dance with Jewish mysticism, Shura's work embodies a unique blend of artistic expression and cultural knowledge. In 2005/06, she expanded her skill set by studying theatre and mime at the prestigious L'École Internationale de Théâtre de Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

As a master of her craft, Shura Lipovsky's work focuses on promoting intercultural and interreligious dialogue through creative expression. She has taught master classes for singers, repertoire classes of Yiddish songs, and workshops in Hassidic dance, songs, and stories. Her extensive teaching and performing career has taken her to numerous universities, festivals, and cultural institutions across Europe and the United States.

Notable highlights of her career include teaching and performing at university courses of Yiddish in Oxford, London, Paris, and Vilnius, as well as at Limud in England and the Jewish Spiritual Retreat Center Elat Chayyim in Upstate New York. She has also performed at the International Yiddish Festival and the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, and Klezfests in London, Paris, Montreal, St. Petersburg, and Weimar.

Shura Lipovsky has collaborated with esteemed musicians from Europe and the United States and has performed at official events, including the Memorial Concert of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1993. Her dedication to intercultural and interreligious dialogue is evident in her work with spiritual leaders from various religions at the Hedwig-Dransfeld-Haus in Bendorf near Koblenz, Germany.

As a member of the committee of recommendation for Musicians without Borders (MwB),Shura Lipovsky is actively involved in promoting peace through music and dance in countries experiencing ethnic conflicts and war. Her discography includes recordings such as Moments of Jewish Life, Heros and Poets, and TSART.
