Prior to his tenure at CNBC, Smith spent an impressive 23 years at Fox News, starting in 1996. During his time at Fox News, Smith held various roles, including Chief General News Anchor and Chief Breaking General News Anchor. He anchored the network's signature evening newscast, Fox Report with Jon Scott, and also anchored the 3 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET portion of Fox News Live, Studio B, the network's daytime hard news programming.
Smith's reporting career began at WJHG-TV (NBC) in Panama City, Fla., where he honed his skills as a journalist. He later joined the Twentieth Century Television syndicated program, A Current Affair, as a news reporter in 1986.
Before joining Fox News, Smith worked as a correspondent for Fox News Edge in Los Angeles, covering a range of stories for the affiliate news service. Some of his notable coverage during this time included the crash of TWA Flight 800, the Montana Freemen standoff, the 1996 presidential campaign, and the Oklahoma City bombing.
Smith's impressive career has seen him cover numerous breaking news stories, including the Columbine school shootings, President Bill Clinton's impeachment trial, the conflict in Kosovo, the Jonesboro, Ark. and Paducah, Ky. school shootings, the 1997 standoff between the U.N. and Iraq, Princess Diana's funeral, the murder of Gianni Versace, and the O.J. Simpson civil trial.
In 2019, Smith left Fox News and joined CNBC in 2020, bringing his expertise and experience to the network.
