Sheila Reid, a seasoned character actress, was born into a military family in Glasgow, Scotland, as one of three siblings. Her early life was marked by a strong desire to be on the stage, a passion encouraged by her father. Reid's childhood was spent "living in the world of make-believe," as she would often immerse herself in imaginative play to escape her own insecurities.

Reid's formal education began at Moreton Hall School in Shropshire, England, and continued at London's prestigious Rose Bruford College. After completing her studies, she went on to further her education at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating in 1958.

Reid's professional career began with the Colchester Repertory Company, where she honed her craft during formative years from 1957 to 1958. In 1963, she joined the Royal National Theatre, where she appeared in various productions, including a filmed version of Othello, alongside notable actors such as Laurence Olivier, Frank Finlay, Derek Jacobi, and Maggie Smith.
