Sean San José has a remarkable career spanning over three decades, marked by the development, creation, production, and premiere of numerous new plays. His work is deeply rooted in San Francisco, where he has made significant contributions to the theatre scene.
As a writer, director, performer, and producer, San José has worn many hats throughout his illustrious career. He is a co-founder of Campo Santo, an award-winning group dedicated to creating new performance pieces. For 15 years, he served as the Program Director of Performance for Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco's oldest alternative arts space.
Currently, San José is the Artistic Director of the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, further solidifying his presence in the city's vibrant theatre community. His writing commissions and productions have been presented by esteemed institutions such as Oregon Shakespeare Festival, American Conservatory Theater, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Ictus Productions, Kronos Quartet, and Kularts, among others.
As a director, San José has worked extensively with Campo Santo, developing and directing numerous performance pieces and plays. Outside of his work with Campo Santo, he has directed at American Conservatory Theatre, the Getty Villa, Latino Theatre Company, the Painted Bride, and many other prominent spaces across the country. His body of work has been recognized with a Rainin/USA Fellowship 2023 award.
San José has a long-standing collaboration with Colman Domingo, with whom he has worked for nearly 30 years. Their partnership has yielded numerous projects, including co-starring in the feature film Sing Sing (A24),writing development on Domingo's television series West Philly, Baby (AMC),and developing Domingo's hit play Dot (New York Theatre Workshop Lab),which San José also directed.
