Thomas has also starred in several iconic films, such as "Cruel Intentions", and has been part of the hit ensemble franchise "Barbershop". He is perhaps best known for his role as the male lead in Paramount's box office smash "Save The Last Dance", which earned him the Young Hollywood Award for Standout Performance and two MTV Movie Awards for Breakthrough Male Performance and Best Kiss.

In addition to his film work, Thomas has made a significant impact in television. He recently wrapped a featured role in Hulu's "Reasonable Doubt", reuniting him with Kerry Washington who executive produced and directed on the series. Thomas' television highlights include Kenny Leon's "A Raisin In the Sun" on ABC, which earned him a nomination from the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actor in a TV Movie for his portrayal of George Murchison. He has also appeared in the CBS series "The District", which won him a MovieGuide Award, and had a recurring role on "The Good Fight".

As a theatre trained actor, Thomas has assumed various roles on stage. He played Joseph Asagai in the Tony-award winning revival of "A Raisin In the Sun" in the Broadway production featuring Denzel Washington. Off-Broadway, Thomas appeared twice with the NY Public Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park in "Much Ado About Nothing", and "Timon of Athens". He has also appeared in regional productions, including the title role in "Othello" at Seattle's Intiman Theatre, and James Baldwin's "The Amen Corner" at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre.
