Scott Mactavish is a multifaceted individual with a diverse range of accomplishments. As a filmmaker, he has written, produced, and directed numerous films, including the award-nominated MURPH: The Protector. He has also been a guest speaker at various corporations and universities, such as Penn State and the University of Virginia, and has appeared on national television networks like Fox News, NBC, PBS, MSNBC, and CBS.
Born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Mactavish joined the US Navy at the age of 17, serving for four years of active duty and two years of reserve duty. He was stationed in various locations, including California, Cuba, Norfolk, and the North Atlantic, and was a co-captain of the Atlantic Military Championship soccer team.
After his time in the Navy, Mactavish moved to New York City and pursued a career in theater, winning roles on stage and screen. He then attended film school at New York University, where he concentrated in direction and writing. His thesis film, Flowers for Judith, was optioned for broadcast by HBO.
Mactavish went on to work on numerous big-budget Hollywood films during the day and honed his writing skills at night. He founded Mactavish Pictures in 2002 and has since written, produced, and directed several films, including Chagas: A Hidden Affliction and Summer Running. He has also consulted on a dozen other films and documentaries.
In addition to his work in film, Mactavish is a published author, having written the New Dad's Survival Guide and co-authored Battle Ready: Memoir of a SEAL Warrior Medic. He is a contributing writer for several publications, including Indiewire, Film Threat, and Windcheck Sailing Magazine.
Mactavish is a busy individual who divides his time between New York City and Nashville. In his free time, he coaches JV and varsity soccer and holds a black belt in American Kempo. He is also a veteran of the US Navy and has been involved with several veterans organizations.
