Satyajit Bhatkal, a Mumbai native, was born to Laila, a dedicated teacher working with children with special needs, and Ramdas, a leading publisher. Growing up, Satyajit's parents instilled in him a strong sense of social responsibility, which would later shape his career as a lawyer, filmmaker, and television producer.
As a student and young lawyer, Satyajit was actively involved in various social and political causes, using his writing skills to raise awareness about pressing issues. His experiences as an activist and lawyer led him to believe he had a story to tell, and in his mid-thirties, he made the bold decision to leave law behind and pursue a career in film and television.
Satyajit's early foray into the film industry was marked by his involvement in the landmark Hindi film, Lagaan. He was part of the core production team and also directed India's first theatrically released documentary, 'Chale Chalo', which was later cut into an English version, 'Madness in the Desert', winning a National Award and selected for the Locarno Film Festival. The documentary explored the human drama and struggles that made the film Lagaan possible.
Satyajit's subsequent projects included writing and directing 'The Spirit of Lagaan', a bestseller in 2003, which was translated into three Indian languages. He then wrote and directed 'Bombay Lawyers', a critically acclaimed mini-series that tackled important social issues through fictionalized courtroom drama, broadcast by NDTV India in 2007.
In 2010, actor-producer-director Aamir Khan invited Satyajit to develop a television show on social issues. Satyajit assembled a small team, including long-time collaborators Lancy Fernandes and his wife Svati, and over several months, they created 'Satyamev Jayate'. Telecast and watched worldwide, the show has seen three seasons and 25 episodes to date.
Today, Satyajit resides in Mumbai with his wife Svati and their children, Nayantara and Nishant.
