Satish Alekar, a renowned playwright, director, and stage actor, was born in New Delhi but spent his formative years in the vibrant city of Pune, Maharashtra. He pursued his higher education at the University of Pune, graduating with a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry in 1972.
As a prominent figure in the Indian theatre scene since 1973, Satish Alekar is one of the founder members of the prestigious Theatre Academy in Pune. He is particularly known for his work in his native language, Marathi, and has penned several notable plays, including Mahanirvan, Begum Barve, and Mahapoor, which have gained widespread recognition.
The English translations of his plays were published by Oxford University Press, Delhi, under the title "Collected Plays of Satish Alekar" in 2009. Additionally, he scripted the Marathi screenplay "Jait Re Jait," directed by Jabbar Patel, in 1976.
Throughout his illustrious career, Satish Alekar has also taught Biochemistry at B.J. Medical College, Pune, from 1972 to 1996. He then went on to become the Professor and Head of the Centre for Performing Arts at the University of Pune, a position he held from 1996 to 2009. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of performing arts, the University honored him with the title of Distinguished Professor (Performing Arts) in September 2013.
Many of his students have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Indian film and television industry in Mumbai. Despite reaching the age of 65, Satish Alekar remains actively involved in both theatre and films. He is married to Anita, whom he wed in 1976, and they have a son named MIKIN. Tragically, Anita passed away in 2007. Satish Alekar currently resides in Pune, Maharashtra, India.
