Ryan Murphy was appointed associate music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on March 27, 2009, a position that involves assisting Dr. Mack Wilberg, music director, in rehearsals, concerts, tours, and the weekly broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word.
As associate music director, Murphy is responsible for conducting the Temple Square Chorale, the preparatory ensemble for new singers in choir service. He brings with him extensive choral conducting and professional musical theater experience.
Prior to his appointment, Murphy conducted six choirs in the Boston area, including two choirs at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music. He served as choral director at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, an internationally recognized secondary school affiliated with the New England Conservatory, for four years.
Murphy has also held positions as music director at the Tuacahn theatre in the St. George, Utah area and the Sundance Institute in Provo, Utah, where he worked for five seasons. During his time in Boston, he maintained an active performing schedule, collaborating at the Tanglewood Summer Festival.
Murphy holds a degree in piano and organ performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University, as well as a master's degree in choral conducting and a doctorate in choral conducting from Boston University.
In his personal life, Murphy is married to Jennifer and they have three children together.
