Biography

Russell Johnson, a renowned character actor, earned the iconic nickname "The Professor" in the beloved cult comedy series Gilligan's Island (1964),but his journey to stardom began long before his memorable portrayal. Johnson's impressive filmography boasts a range of Westerns and Sci-Fi classics, including the notable roles in This Island Earth (1955) and It Came from Outer Space (1953).

Born in Pennsylvania, Johnson's life took a significant turn after his father's untimely passing, prompting his brothers and him to be sent to a boarding school in Philadelphia. Johnson's early academic struggles, including being held back a grade, were a far cry from his eventual success, as he went on to join the National Honor Society in high school.

Johnson's remarkable journey continued during World War II, where he served in the Army Air Corps. Tragedy struck when his B-24 Liberator was shot down over the Philippines, leaving him with broken ankles. Despite his injuries, Johnson was awarded the Purple Heart and spent time recovering in the hospital. After the war, he utilized the G.I. Bill to pursue his passion for acting, enrolling in acting school to hone his craft.

Following his military service, Johnson settled in the state of Washington, where he continued to work in television, making guest appearances on various shows. Johnson's personal life was marked by his loving relationship with his wife, Constance Dane, and their two children. Tragically, Johnson's life came to a close on January 16, 2014, when he passed away peacefully from kidney failure, surrounded by his loved ones. His wife, Connie, fondly remembered her husband as a courageous individual, who faced his challenges with bravery.
