Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India, to John Lockwood Kipling, a museum director and author, and illustrator, during the height of the British Raj. As a result, he was raised by Indian nurses, known as "ayahs," who taught him about the beliefs and languages of India. When he was six years old, he was sent to live with a foster mother in England, who treated him cruelly.
