Ruby Yang, a renowned filmmaker, has made a significant impact in the industry, winning an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject for her film "The Blood of Yingzhou District" in 2006. She is also known for directing "The Warriors of Qiugang" in 2010 and "My Voice, My Life" in 2014.
Yang's work is not limited to her documentary films. Alongside filmmaker Thomas Lennon, she launched a massive multi-year AIDS prevention campaign that was broadcast over 900 million times on Chinese television. Together, they created a trilogy of short documentary films that explored modern China, including "The Blood of Yingzhou District", which won an Oscar in 2007; "Tongzhi in Love", which was shortlisted in 2009; and "The Warriors of Qiugang", nominated in 2011.
Yang's career has taken her to various parts of the world. She lived and worked in San Francisco for many years before relocating to Beijing in 2004. In 2013, she was appointed as the Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities at the University of Hong Kong. Her latest documentary, "My Voice, My Life", was released in 13 theaters in Hong Kong and Macau, and was named one of Hong Kong's five most notable films of 2014 by the Wall Street Journal (China).
Yang is an active member of the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She is currently the head of the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative at the University of Hong Kong, where she works to support emerging documentary filmmakers in the region.
