Rubaiyat Hossain is a prominent figure among Bangladesh's limited number of female filmmakers, renowned for her thought-provoking debut feature film Meherjaan (2011),which garnered widespread critical acclaim despite facing intense political and cultural backlash in Bangladesh due to its unconventional anti-war narrative and bold critique of masculine nationalism from a distinctly feminine perspective.
Her subsequent feature film Under Construction (2015) made its premiere at the prestigious New Directors Showcase at the Seattle International Film Festival and received a theatrical release in Bangladesh, where it was met with widespread acclaim.
Rubaiyat's third feature film, Made in Bangladesh (2019),premiered at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival and was distributed by Pyramide Films, further solidifying her reputation as a talented and innovative filmmaker.
Throughout her work, Rubaiyat employs a feminist lens to challenge and deconstruct the deeply ingrained patriarchal institution of cinema, offering a fresh and unique perspective that is both powerful and thought-provoking.
Before embarking on her illustrious filmmaking career, Rubaiyat completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Women Studies at Smith College, USA, and went on to earn her Master of Arts degree in South Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
Currently, Rubaiyat divides her time between Dhaka and New York, where she is actively involved in making films and pursuing her academic interests in Cinema Studies at the Tisch School of Arts at New York University.
