Roy Minton, a renowned English playwright, was born in Nottingham, England. He is best known for his work with Alan Clarke, particularly his iconic play Scum. Minton's impressive career spanned over three decades, during which he wrote an astonishing 30 one-off scripts for various television networks, including London Weekend Television, Rediffusion, BBC, ATV, Granada, Thames Television, and Yorkshire Television.
Some of his notable works include Sling Your Hook, Horace, Funny Farm, Scum, Goodnight Albert, and The Hunting of Lionel Crane. His plays have been translated and performed at festivals and theatres across the UK, including the Royal Shakespeare Company in London and Riverside Studios in London, where his play Scum was read.
In 2023, Minton's friend, Irish actor and author Eugene O'Hare, facilitated the transfer of Minton's literary archive to Nottingham University Library, where it will be preserved as a permanent collection. The archive includes unseen novels, an autobiography, and a follow-up screenplay to his iconic play Scum.
Sadly, Minton's life was cut short when he passed away on the morning of August 17th, 2024, in North London.
