Born on December 23, 1931, in Richmond, California, Ronnie Schell initially wanted to play professional baseball. However, he joined the United States Air Force instead, where he honed his comedy skills as an emcee and comic in variety shows.
After studying at San Francisco State University, Schell formed a comedy duo and later turned solo, perfecting his routine at The Purple Onion. He gained a major breakthrough when he toured with The Kingston Trio, which led to a family-oriented comedy career.
Schell opened for several stars, including Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, and eventually landed a regular role on the popular TV series Gomer Pyle: USMC as Duke Slater. He also appeared on other shows, such as That Girl and Good Morning World.
Schell then moved into film, starring in Disney movies like The Strongest Man in the World, The Shaggy D.A., and The Cat from Outer Space. He also reunited with Jim Nabors on The Jim Nabors Hour and appeared in numerous TV shows, including The Patty Duke Show, The Andy Griffith Show, and Happy Days.
As a voice artist, Schell worked extensively on TV animated programs, including Goober and the Ghost Chasers, Yogi's Space Race, and The Smurfs. He also starred in stage shows, such as the 2007 touring cabaret show "5 Star Revue" and the 2009 musical comedy revue "Don't Leave it All to Your Children!"
Schell continued to work in film and TV throughout his career, appearing in shows like Yes, Dear, Easy to Assemble, and Jessie. He was married with two children and lived in the Los Angeles area, where he served as the honorary mayor of Encino.
