Born on March 19, 1951, in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of Harry Raymond Smith, a former Georgia Tech football player and World War II and Korean War P-51 fighter pilot, who tragically passed away when Ron was just 15 years old.
Smith's mother, Theresa Vina Gooch, was a model and homemaker who instilled in her son a love for music from an early age. Ron studied voice in church and high school choirs, and as a teenager, he took up the guitar and played in bands. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
