Robin Sky Bicknell is a multi-award-winning documentary director, producer, and writer, renowned for her expertise in high-end history, pop culture, deep access, and human stories. She excels at connecting with subjects in interview and creating films and series that are both authentic and cinematic.
Throughout her illustrious career, Bicknell has collaborated with numerous top broadcasters, including the BBC, Channel 4, A&E, History, PBS, CBC, Discovery Channel, ARTÉ, ZDF, Science Channel, Superchannel, MTV, Channel 5, TLC, Discovery Health, Discovery ID, Canal-Vie, Discovery Europe, Slice Network, W Network, Smithsonian Channel, CTV, and Global Television.
Her most recent project, Walking with Ancients (Ice Age America),is a feature film that she wrote and directed for Discovery, ARTÉ, and CBC's The Nature of Things. This groundbreaking documentary explores incredible archaeological discoveries that push back the date of human arrival to the Americas by 15,000 years, and is currently nominated for the best non-fiction science and technology documentary at the 2024 Realscreen Awards.
Bicknell's film, The Machine That Feels, which was directed at the height of the pandemic, has also received numerous nominations, including best science documentary at Realscreen 2023. This thought-provoking film examines how AI technology is catching up to humans in ways once thought to be uniquely human, such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and creativity.
In addition to her recent work, Bicknell has also directed Ice Bridge, which won the Best History Documentary award at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. This documentary chronicles a top-secret archaeological dig that tells the story of ancient hunters crossing an ice-covered Atlantic Ocean 20,000 years ago.
Bicknell has also co-directed D-Day in 14 stories, a feature film about 14 of the last surviving people who witnessed and fought on D-day. Furthermore, she directed The Genetic Revolution, a pop-science film about the controversial gene editing technology CRISPR, which garnered a prestigious nomination for Best Science and Technology Film at the 2019 Banff Television awards and three Canadian Screen Award nominations.
