Robert Sigl is a renowned German film director, screenwriter, and producer, born in Munich, Germany. He graduated from the Munich Film School in 1987 and began his career by preparing for his first full-length motion picture, Laurin, shot in Hungary with Hungarian actors in English. Laurin was a critical and commercial success, earning the Bavarian Film Award for "Best Direction of a newcomer" at the age of 25.
Sigl's subsequent projects include the acclaimed miniseries Stella Stellaris, a fantasy/comedy/adventure, and the episode "Alarm für Cobra 11 - Die verlorene Tochter" for the popular German action series Alarm für Cobra 11 - Die Autobahnpolizei. His work on these projects caught the attention of Canadian producer Paul Donovan and the executives of the American cable network Showtime, leading to his commission to direct one of the four pilot episodes, Giga Shadow, for the Science Fiction mini-series Lexx.
Sigl's notable works also include the German horror-thriller School's Out, which became one of the most successful TV movies of 1999, and its sequel, Dead Island: Schools Out 2. He has also directed several episodes of the highly acclaimed and award-winning German crime series Der Ermittler, SOKO Donau, and Tatort.
In recent years, Sigl has worked on the thriller Hepzibah - Sie holt dich im Schlaf, starring Eleanor Tomlinson, Finn Atkins, David Bamber, and Murray Melvin, and is currently prepping his new film, The Mandylion, a 15-Million-Dollar-production to be shot in Malta, Istanbul, and New York. The film features Malcolm McDowell and will be scored by three-time Oscar winner Howard Shore.
Sigl is also working on other new projects for the big screen, including The 13th Disciple, Medusa, Lazarus, Wurdilak, The Blind Room, Golgatha, and the Holocaust-drama Pink Triangle Jew. For his work on the TV series "Vienna Crime Squad", Sigl was nominated for the Metropolis German Director Award 2012.
