Robert Kellard was born on April 23, 1915, in Los Angeles, as the younger of two boys. His father, Ralph Kellard, was an actor, and his aunt, Virginia Harned Courtenay, was also an actress. Kellard's initial interest in acting was triggered by his father and aunt. He attended Hollywood High School, where he made his minor movie debut as a teenager in the film "A Connecticut Yankee" (1931).
