Robert Beatty graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and initially pursued his passion for amateur dramatics with the Hamilton Player's Guild. Prior to establishing himself as a professional actor, he made a living as a cashier for a gas and fuel company. In order to further hone his acting skills, he followed the advice of Leslie Howard and moved to London in 1936 to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). His theatrical debut was in the play "Idiot's Delight" at the Apollo Theatre, and he subsequently obtained regular work on both stage and screen, initially in bit parts and walk-ons.
