Tomosaka Rie, a renowned singer and actress, was born in Nagano's western prefecture, but grew up in Tokyo. She is also known by her alias, Sakatomo Eri, under which she released music. Tomosaka's acting career began in 1992, when she landed a role in a Toyota car commercial. This opportunity arose due to a talent agency president discovering her photograph, which was framed by her hairstylist father.
As a result of her father's connection, Tomosaka signed with Itoh agency, with whom she remains under contract to this day. Her breakout role came in Kindaichi Shonen No Jikembo: Shanghai Ningyo Densetsu, a series about a schoolboy with a famous detective grandfather. In the late 1990s, Tomosaka expanded her repertoire to include singing, releasing music with the aid of collaborator Ringo Shina, a well-known Japanese musician.
Tomosaka attended Tokyo's Teikyo University, majoring in International Culture, but dropped out in 1999. During her time at university, she struggled with anorexia nervosa, which she attributed to the pressures and alienation she experienced from her classmates, who were envious of her rapid rise to fame.
In her personal life, Tomosaka married actor Kawahara Masahiko in 2003 and gave birth to a son in 2004. The couple divorced in 2008.
