Richard Chamberlain, the renowned actor, was born George Richard Chamberlain on March 31, 1934, in Beverly Hills, California. He was the second son of Elsa Winnifred von Benzon and Charles Axiom Chamberlain, a salesman, and had English and German ancestry. Chamberlain's childhood was marked by unhappiness, and he did not enjoy school, although he excelled in track and became a four-year letter man in high school and college.
