Biography

René Féret, a renowned filmmaker from the North of France, is a testament to the power of passion and determination. Born in 1945 in La Bassée, Féret's childhood in the small town of Annequin was marked by a deep appreciation for cinema, nurtured by the parish priest, a fellow film enthusiast. This early interest in the art form led Féret to pursue a career in the theater, where he honed his skills as an actor before transitioning to filmmaking.

Féret's journey as a filmmaker began in 1974, when he collaborated with a group of fellow actors and technicians to produce his first film, "Histoire de Paul". Despite facing significant financial challenges, Féret persevered, securing funding through a combination of borrowed money and a grant from the CNC. The film's success, which earned Féret the 1975 Jean Vigo Prize, marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career.

Throughout his career, Féret's work has been characterized by its sincerity and authenticity, often drawing heavily from his own life experiences. Films such as "La Communion solennelle" (1976) and "Baptême" (1988) are deeply personal and autobiographical, while others, like "Nannerl" (2010),showcase his ability to tackle complex and nuanced subjects.

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Féret was also a dedicated producer, often supporting the work of other directors and ensuring his films remained true to his artistic vision. He was also a respected educator, teaching cinema at the University of Lille 3 from 1995 to 2010.

René Féret's passing in 2015, at the age of 69, was a significant loss to the film community, but his legacy continues to inspire and influence new generations of filmmakers.
