Rebecca Thomson is a Tasmanian-based filmmaker residing in nipaluna/Hobart with her husband, three miniature humans, chooks, bees, and an extensive costume collection. With a multifaceted approach to filmmaking, she has been involved in various aspects of the industry, including writing, producing, directing, shooting, editing, and distributing. Throughout her career, Rebecca has created numerous films, including the offbeat genre shorts Cupcake: A Zombie Lesbian Musical, Slashed, and The Jelly Wrestler, which have collectively screened at over seventy film festivals worldwide, such as Frameline San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Fest, and New York City International Film Festival, garnering numerous awards along the way.
In 2019, Rebecca completed the Screen Australia-funded film A Hairy Problem, exploring female body hair, which has garnered almost a million online views. Her short film I Am Undone was selected for the anthology feature film A Night of Horror: Volume 1, produced by Deadhouse Pictures. Rebecca is also one of the key filmmakers behind the multi-award-winning web series Women Of The Island, a collection of short documentaries that showcase the fascinating women inhabiting Tasmania. The series has been well-received, playing to sold-out audiences throughout Tasmania as part of Ten Days On The Island 2019, and has been an official selection for numerous international festivals, including the Berlin Web Fest 2019, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, as well as the LA Webfest and Baltimore Webfest, where it took home the Best Cinematography and Best Direction in a Doco Series awards, respectively.
In 2020, Rebecca enjoyed collaborating on several music videos for songwriter/songstress Monique Brumby, and has recently completed a series of animated documentaries called There Is No I In Island, which reflect on the fears and dreams of the Tasmanian community during the Covid-19 lockdown. Rebecca is currently in writing mode, working on a web series of original fairytales that she is developing with creative producer Catherine Pettman. Additionally, she runs a highly shonky but super fun festival in her own backyard, known as Bec's Backyard Film Festival!
