Biography

Lafayette Russell, better known as "Reb" Russell, was born on May 31, 1905, in Coffeyville, Kansas. As a child, he demonstrated exceptional athletic prowess, which continued to flourish throughout his school years. In fact, he was a star running back on the University of Nebraska football team and later gained further fame when he switched to Northwestern University, where he played fullback and earned the esteemed title of All-American in 1930.

It was only natural that a charismatic, good-looking, and renowned football star like Russell would attract the attention of Hollywood. And, indeed, he was eventually offered small roles in a few films at Fox Pictures. However, despite his athletic accomplishments, riding abilities, and dashing good looks, Russell struggled to make a lasting impression in the film industry. He went on to sign a contract with independent producer Willis Kent to star in a series of low-budget westerns, which included titles such as "The Man from Hell" (1934),"Lightning Triggers" (1935),and "Blazing Guns" (1935).

Unfortunately, Russell's lack of acting talent, combined with the subpar production values, uninspired scripts, and overall mediocrity of the films, meant that they failed to leave a lasting impact on either fans or the Hollywood establishment. By 1935, Russell had parted ways with Kent, and he went on to tour with several traveling circuses throughout the 1930s. In the 1940s, he returned to his hometown of Coffeyville, married, and started a family. He also purchased several ranches, becoming an expert in livestock breeding. Russell eventually passed away in Coffeyville on November 13, 1978, due to complications from a heart attack.
