He served as the Minister of Commerce from January to August 1976, as part of the government led by Prime Minister Jacques Chirac. Later, he was appointed Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, a position he held from August 27, 1976, to May 25, 1981.
Throughout his tenure, Le Chevallier also served as the Deputy of Rhône from April 1977 to June 2002, subsequently announcing his retirement after the 2002 elections. He also held the esteemed position of Mayor of Lyon from 1995 to 2001.
