Biography

Randy Thom's illustrious career in the film industry began in 1978 when he was hired as a sound effects recordist on Apocalypse Now, released in 1979. Since then, he has worked on over 175 films in various creative capacities within the sound department. Thom's impressive resume includes being the music mixer on Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, released in 1983, and the production sound mixer for all footage shot in the US.

As a sound designer and mixer, Thom has been part of the Skywalker Sound facility at Lucasfilm since 1983, following in the footsteps of esteemed sound designers Walter Murch and Ben Burtt. His work often begins before filming starts, becoming an integral part of the storytelling and emotional impact of the film. Thom has been a core member of Robert Zemeckis' creative team since Forrest Gump, released in 1994, and has collaborated with top Hollywood talents such as Walter Murch, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, Chris Columbus, Mel Brooks, and the Farrelly Brothers.

Throughout his career, Thom has received two Academy Awards for sound, for The Right Stuff in 1983, and for sound editing, for The Incredibles in 2004. He has a total of fifteen Oscar nominations.
