Biography

Rade Markovic's life journey began in Belgrade, where he pursued his education at the College of Engineering and Philosophical Faculty. His foray into the world of theatre commenced as a member of the cultural artistic company "Ivo Lola Ribar" and the Youth Theatre. He then took the stage by storm as a performer at the Academic Theatre from 1946 to 1949. With a career spanning over sixty years, Markovic has created over one hundred theatre roles, starred in seventy-eight national and international film productions, and acted in over sixty dramas and TV series produced by TV Belgrade.

Throughout his illustrious career, Markovic has showcased his remarkable talent in a wide range of iconic roles, including "A Dubious Character" by Branislav Nusic, "Nikoletina Bursac" by Branko Copic, "Lodgings" by Milos Crnjanski, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" by Tennessee Williams, "Oblomov" by Goncharov, and Pozzo in "En attendant Godot" by Samuel Beckett. This latter performance, which featured Ljuba Tadic, Mihajlo 'Bata' Paskaljevic, and Milivoje 'Mica' Tomic, marked the first performance of Beckett's play in Eastern Europe, taking place in 1956 at Atelje 212.

In addition to his impressive theatre career, Markovic has also made a lasting impact as a professor of acting. He has taught at the Novi Sad Academy of Arts since September 1981 and at the "Braca Karic" Academy in Belgrade since 1997. For his outstanding contributions to the world of theatre, Markovic has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Belgrade October Award (1963),the award for acting at the Sterija's Theatre Festival (1958),two awards for acting at the Festival of Small Scenes in Sarajevo (1962 and 1971),three "Arena" awards at the Yugoslav Film Festival in Pula (1955, 1957, and 1963),the award at the Festival of Bulgarian Film in Varna (1964),the Seventh July Award (1981),and the "Slavica" award for life work at Film Encounters in Nis (1989),among many others.

Rade Markovic's legacy extends far beyond his remarkable performances and awards. He is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished protagonists of modern acting expression, leaving a lasting impact on the development of Yugoslav and Serbian theatre arts after World War II. His dedication to his craft and his ability to adapt to various roles have made him a model of a successful multimedia artist, inspiring generations of performers and theatre enthusiasts alike.
