Pierre Chemaly, a man of great passion and dedication, was born in a mining town in Africa. After completing his high school education, he joined the navy and embarked on a journey that would shape his future. Serving as an Able-Seaman, he honed his skills in photography, capturing life through the lens of his camera.
A documentary screening at the navy base about the renowned photographer Ansel Adams had a profound impact on Pierre. It inspired him to pursue further education and apply to the prestigious California Institute of the Arts. There, he was fortunate to study under the guidance of esteemed mentors such as Kris Malkiewicz, Alexander Mackendrick, and Ed Emshwiller.
Under the tutelage of these masters, Pierre's understanding of photography evolved from a cold, technical skill to a warm, artistic form. He delved deeper into the world of film, art, and photography, exploring the nuances of each medium.
As he continued his studies, Pierre sought to gain hands-on experience in professional motion picture cameras. He reached out to Bob Dunn at Panavision, and during a tour of the facility, he discovered a shared connection - Bob, too, was a navy man. This chance encounter led to a part-time job at Panavision, which Pierre balanced with his studies.
After graduating, Pierre was hired full-time by Panavision's CEO, Jac Holzman, who had also founded Electra Records and signed iconic artists such as the Doors, Queen, and Bread. At Panavision, Pierre became certified as a Camera Technician, servicing the full range of Panavision and Arriflex cameras.
Since his days at Panavision, Pierre has worked extensively in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, directing and photographing films, as well as creating digital art and painting. His artistic endeavors have been shaped by his Master's Degree in Photography from Falmouth University in the United Kingdom.
Throughout his career, Pierre Chemaly has demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt, innovate, and excel in various creative fields. His journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and mentorship.
