Phyllis MacBryde embarked on a theatrical journey, commencing her career as a talented actor, gracing esteemed stages such as Circle in the Square in New York and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., as well as participating in national tours and various summer stock productions.
As her passion for the performing arts continued to evolve, she branched out into the realm of writing, collaborating with renowned composer Roger Bartlett on original musicals. This creative partnership laid the foundation for her future endeavors.
In 1999, MacBryde's screenplay "Zinzi" received recognition, as she was named a finalist for the prestigious Academy of Motion Pictures' Nicholl Fellowship. Furthermore, she was selected for Montage Entertainment's Diversity in Screenwriting Award and developmental workshop, generously sponsored by HBO.
Inspired by this encouragement, she devoted herself to crafting a novel based on the story of "Zinzi." An early draft of her novel was distinguished by being selected as a top five finalist for the esteemed William Faulkner - William Wisdom Award.
