Paul Kalkbrenner, a renowned German musician, has been active in the music industry for over 15 years. Born in 1977, he grew up in Berlin, where he was heavily influenced by the city's thriving techno scene. As a young boy, Kalkbrenner was fascinated by the sounds of techno music, which was still in its infancy at the time.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Kalkbrenner's hometown became a creative playground for young people, and he was inspired to start making music himself. He began producing tracks in the early 1990s, and his first release, the Friedrichshain EP, came out in 1999 on Berlin-based label BPitch Control.
Throughout the 2000s, Kalkbrenner released several successful albums, including Superimpose and Time, and established himself as a prominent figure in the techno scene. His third album, Self, marked a turning point in his career, as it introduced a more narrative aesthetic and showcased his ability to create emotive and melodic music.
In 2006, Kalkbrenner began working on the soundtrack for the film Berlin Calling, which was directed by Hannes Stöhr. The film told the story of a musician in Techno City during the new millennium, and Kalkbrenner composed the score and even starred in the film alongside Sascha Funke.
The soundtrack for Berlin Calling was a huge success, and the single "Sky and Sand" became a crossover hit. The film itself received positive reviews and became a cult classic, thanks to its authentic depiction of the Berlin club scene and drug culture.
Kalkbrenner's success with Berlin Calling led to new opportunities, including a twelve-city live concert tour throughout Europe and headlining appearances at summer festivals. He has since continued to tour and release new music, solidifying his status as one of the most successful techno artists of his generation.
