Noted American character actor, whose cinematic journey began in 1930, initially found himself typecast in roles that portrayed him as a vulnerable or nefarious individual. However, his breakthrough performance as Garth Esdras, a tormented and pursued accomplice to murder, in the 1936 film Winterset, earned him widespread critical acclaim. He also made a lasting impression as a cunning convict who attempted to eliminate James Cagney at the behest of Steve Cochran, only to meet a fitting demise at the bottom of a car trunk, in the 1949 classic White Heat. Following two decades of acting in films, he ventured into film direction, albeit briefly. Sadly, his life was cut short when he passed away at the age of 58.
