Biography

Patrick Malahide's biography:

Patrick Gerald Duggan, better known by his stage name Patrick Malahide, is a Berkshire-born character actor known for his versatility and range. Born to Irish immigrants, Malahide developed an early aptitude for singing and acting while attending the Catholic Douai boarding School in Woolhampton.

Malahide's early career included stints as a stage manager, carpenter, electrician, and actor at the Byre Theatre in St. Andrews, Scotland. He later became artistic director and took on leading roles in plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Shaw, and Miller.

Malahide made his London stage debut in 1972 and went on to join the ensemble of the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and the Bristol Old Vic repertory company. He appeared in classic plays such as Crime and Punishment, Hamlet, and Uncle Vanya.

On screen, Malahide is perhaps best known for his role as Detective Sergeant Albert Chisholm in the TV series Minder, which he played for seven seasons. He has also appeared in a range of other TV shows, including The Sweeney, The Professionals, and Poirot.

Malahide has also had a successful career in period drama and adaptations of literary classics, playing characters such as haughty aristocrats, corrupt officers, and powerful political figures. Some of his notable roles include Alfred Jingle in The Pickwick Papers, Reverend Edward Casaubon in Middlemarch, and Sir Francis Walsingham in Elizabeth I.

In addition to his acting career, Malahide is also a writer and has written screenplays under the pseudonym P.G. Duggan. He is married to photographer Jo Ryan and is a member of the Royal Fowey Yacht club on the south coast of Cornwall.
