Patrick Gale was born on the Isle of Wight, where his father held the esteemed position of governor at Camp Hill Prison. As the youngest of four siblings, the family would later relocate to London, where his father took on the responsibility of managing Wandsworth Prison, and subsequently, Winchester. Gale's academic pursuits led him to earn an English degree from New College, Oxford in 1983.
