Biography

Norodom Sihanouk, a multifaceted individual, was born on October 31, 1922, in the vibrant city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This remarkable person's life was marked by a plethora of accomplishments, as he not only held the esteemed position of King of Cambodia but also showcased his talents as a director, writer, composer, and record producer.

Appointed King at the tender age of nineteen in 1941, Norodom Sihanouk reigned over the nation for an impressive fourteen years, from 1941 to 1955, and again from 1993 to 2004. Throughout his reign, he would frequently serve as Prime Minister, interspersing his time in power with brief periods of leadership.

Norodom Sihanouk was a man of the world, fascinated by the trends and glamour of the Western world. He introduced the iconic dance move "The Twist" to Cambodia in 1960 and went on to produce a series of Cambodian pop and rock'n roll music records. However, not everyone was enamored with his pop concept, and some groups opposed his vision.

In response, Norodom Sihanouk banished these opposition groups from the capital city of Phnom Penh, which ultimately led to the formation of the Khmer Rouge movement. This opposition group would go on to play a significant role in shaping the course of Cambodian history.

In 1965, Norodom Sihanouk expanded his creative pursuits to include filmmaking. For five years, he wrote, directed, produced, and appeared in documentaries and feature films. He resumed his filmmaking endeavors in North Korea in 1988, eventually releasing his last film, "Le Cid Khmer", in Cambodia in 2005.

Throughout his life, Norodom Sihanouk resided in various countries, including the People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, apart from his native Cambodia. His remarkable life came to a close on October 15, 2012, when he passed away due to a heart attack in Beijing, China.
