Biography

Nicholas More Seymour, also known as Nick Seymour, is a renowned musician, best recognized as one-third of the iconic antipodean rock band Crowded House. Born in Benalla, Australia, Nick was the youngest of four children to Frank and Paula Seymour, both secondary school humanities teachers. The Seymour family frequently relocated throughout rural Victoria as his parents pursued seniority-promotion in the State Education system.

Nick's mother, Paula, was an ardent fan of Irish traditional music, and she instilled her children with a love for harmony and round singing. The Seymour family would often perform as "The Seymour Family Singers" at weddings, parties, and other social gatherings. Nick's siblings, Hilary, Helen, and Mark, all learned to play the piano and guitar, with Mark later forming and fronting the rock band Hunters and Collectors.

Nick pursued an art school education, attending Caulfield Institute and later the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, where he majored in Printmaking. To finance his studies, he worked on various film and TV productions, including "The Sullivans" and "Carsons' Law".

In the early 1980s, Nick picked up a bass guitar and began performing with several fledgling rock bands on the Melbourne scene. His big break came when Neil Finn and Paul Hester of Split Enz invited him to join their new project, which would eventually become Crowded House. The band secured a recording deal in Hollywood and released their debut album, also titled Crowded House, which was met with great success.

Apart from his bass duties, Nick was also responsible for the band's visual branding, including costume design, stage sets, and album cover art. Crowded House went on to achieve worldwide acclaim until their farewell performance at the Sydney Opera House in 1996, following Neil Finn's departure to Auckland, New Zealand.

After his early retirement, Nick relocated to Dublin, Ireland, where he established Exchequer Studios with collaborator Brian Crosby. Although more of a writing room than a commercial studio, Exchequer has nurtured many local talent, including the award-winning singer-songwriter Hozier. Nick has since produced solo artists, bands, and award-winning movie soundtracks.

Today, Nick lives with his young family, including his partner Nicola, and their children Lola and Frank, on the Atlantic coast near Easkey, County Sligo.
