Nicholas Proffitt, a renowned author, drew inspiration from his illustrious career as a member of the 3rd U.S. Infantry detachment, which was responsible for serving as the honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery, situated just outside the nation's capital, Washington, D.C.

Following his distinguished military service, Proffitt pursued higher education, graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in journalism. He then embarked on a remarkable journalistic career, working as a reporter for Newsweek, where he covered various significant events and conflicts, including the wars in Vietnam and Lebanon.

Throughout his professional journey, Proffitt demonstrated remarkable growth and dedication, eventually rising through the ranks to become the Bureau Chief for Newsweek in London and later, Nairobi.
