Nena, born Gabriele Susanne Kerner in 1960, is a German singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the 1980s as the lead singer of the band Nena. Born in Hagen, Germany, she got the name Nena at the age of three while on vacation in Spain.
Nena's music career began at 17 as the singer of her first band, The Stripes, with their debut single "Ecstasy" released in 1979. The band broke up in 1981, and Nena formed her eponymous band with drummer Rolf Brendel, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, Carlo Karges, and Jürgen Dehmel.
Nena's breakthrough came with the release of her single "99 Luftballons" in 1983, which topped the charts worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon. The song was later translated into English and released as "99 Red Balloons," which also became a hit.
Nena continued to release successful albums and singles throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including "Nur geträumt," "Wunder gescheh'n," and "Oldschool Baby." She also released several children's albums and appeared in various films and television shows.
