Mpumelelo is a renowned South African artist and cultural activist, recognized as a leading figure in the country's creative scene.
As a member of the internationally acclaimed rock band BLK JKS, Mpumelelo plays the guitar, having taught himself the instrument. However, he is quick to clarify that he does not consider himself a guitarist. Instead, he views himself as a polymath, with a passion for multiple art forms, including film, art, and music.
Mpumelelo is an autodidact musician and filmmaker, with a strong background in self-directed learning. His debut feature film, "Black President," is a creative documentary that explores the life and work of celebrated Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai. The film premiered at the 65th Berlinale in 2015 as part of the Forum Expanded program.
Mpumelelo's second feature film, "Film Festival Film," co-directed with Perivi Katjavivi, will have its world premiere at the 69th Berlinale in February 2019.
In addition to his work in film, Mpumelelo co-founded End Street Africa with Anna Teeman in 2019. The organization's next project is "An African Thrillogy," a fiction feature trilogy that promises to be an exciting and innovative addition to the world of African cinema.
