Michael Matthews, a talented filmmaker, made his feature directorial debut with the contemporary Western, Five Fingers For Marseilles, set in rural South Africa.
The film premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and went on to be showcased at various prestigious film festivals, including the BFI London Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, and Fantastic Fest, among many others.
Five Fingers For Marseilles garnered significant recognition, winning a total of five African Movie Academy Awards, including Best Film, Best Film in an African Language, and Best First Feature Film by a Director.
Michael's subsequent feature film, Love and Monsters, was produced by Paramount Pictures and 21 Laps Entertainment, and received an Academy Award nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Visual Effects.
In addition to his work in feature films, Matthews has also directed commercials, music videos, and short films, including the award-winning Apocalypse Now Now, which took home the Best Short Film prize at the 2018 South African Film & TV Awards.
