Michael James Rowland is an Australian writer and director who initially gained recognition with his 2007 feature film, 'Lucky Miles'. This film received four stars and was described by Paul Byrnes as 'the wizard of Oz without Dorothy or the dog', which was an unexpected re-framing of illegal immigration as a comedy. As a result, 'Lucky Miles' won several prestigious awards, including the Sydney Film Festival's Audience Award, Abu Dhabi's Black Pearl, and praise from notable critics Bob Ellis and Andrew Bolt.
