Michael Gassert is a renowned American-Italian sound artist, musician, and documentary filmmaker. He earned an Emmy Award in 2023 for his work on the PBS/POV-acquired documentary "The Last Out" (2020),which tells the powerful true story of athletics and exile.
Gassert's documentary "The Last Out" received numerous awards, including the Special Jury Prize for Best New Director at the Tribeca Film Festival, the Matt DeCample Audience Choice Award at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, and the Grand Jury Prize at the Florida Film Festival.
As a sound artist, Gassert has worked on numerous documentaries and art house classics, including "Momma's Man" (2008),"Another Earth" (2011),"Circumstance" (2011),and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (2012). He has also mixed national broadcasts and hundreds of films.
Gassert's musical career has been marked by his work with the Master Musicians of Jajouka, a legendary Moroccan trance group. He has also founded his own record label and has released several albums with the group, including "Jajouka Live Vol. 1" (2009) and "Road to Jajouka" (2013).
As a musician, Gassert has recorded and performed with several bands, including Pink Drink, Great Woods, and Loveskills. He has also collaborated with other musicians, such as Jason Moran and the Kronos Quartet.
Gassert's current projects include two long-form documentary films, "La Escuelita" and "There Will Be Brats".
