Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to actors Diana Douglas and Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas's parents divorced when he was six, and he went to live with his mother and her new husband. He attended Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and later attended the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Douglas began his acting career in the 1960s, making his film debut in his father's film Cast a Giant Shadow (1966). He gained recognition for his roles in films such as Hail, Hero!
