Biography

Melvin Parker was an American drummer born on June 7, 1944, and passed away on December 3, 2021. He was a key member of James Brown's band, along with his brother Maceo Parker, a saxophonist. Melvin's drumming style played a significant role in James Brown's funk music innovations during the 1960s.

Melvin Parker was the drummer on three of James Brown's recordings between 1964 and 1965, including "Out of Sight," "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," and "I Got You (I Feel Good)." James Brown himself reflected on Melvin's exceptional drumming skills, stating that he was the "greatest drummer I ever had in my life." Brown praised Melvin's ability to create unique rhythms, saying that nobody could replicate his style, not even today.

Melvin's initial association with James Brown ended when he was drafted in the mid-1960s. He was replaced by Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks. Melvin rejoined James Brown's band in 1969 and appeared on the album Sex Machine.

In 1970, Melvin was part of a mutiny by James Brown's band. After leaving James Brown, Melvin joined his brother Maceo's band, Maceo & All the King's Men. Melvin briefly rejoined James Brown's band in 1976 and played on the hit single "Get Up Offa That Thing."
