Max Cullen is an Australian character actor, born Maxwell Phillip Cullen, known for his versatility and ability to convey a wide range of emotions on screen. He was born in Wellington, New South Wales, the son of electrical linesman Alec Charles Cullen and his wife Lila Mary (née Yale). Cullen has two siblings, including the late actor Cul Cullen.

Cullen's early life was marked by his passion for art, and he attended the National Art School in Sydney to study painting and sculpture. He later worked as a freelance illustrator, cartoonist, and layout artist, submitting graphics to various publications.

Cullen's acting career began on the stage, where he trained under American-born actor and stage director Hayes Gordon. He performed with the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli, Sydney, for ten years, perfecting his craft and appearing in numerous productions.

Cullen's television career began in the 1960s, with recurring roles in the sitcom Mrs Finnegan and the espionage series Spyforce. He went on to appear in numerous television dramas, including Riptide, Division 4, Homicide, Matlock Police, Secret Valley, The Flying Doctors, and Love My Way.

Cullen's film career has been marked by his ability to adapt to a wide range of roles. He has appeared in iconic Australian films such as Sunday Too Far Away, The Office Picnic, and My Brilliant Career. He has also appeared in international films, including The Great Gatsby and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Cullen has been married three times and has written an autobiography, "Tell 'em Nothin', Take 'em Nowhere", which was published in 2010. He currently resides in an old theatre in Gunning, near Canberra, with his third wife, the renowned painter, sculptor, and designer Margarita Georgiadis.
