Matt May is a talented actor, best recognized for his role as Special Agent Gabe Clements in the 2016 critically acclaimed television series The Family, starring Joan Allen. However, his career spans over two decades, with a prolific presence in both television and film. He has made notable guest appearances on Bull and Elementary, and has secured supporting roles in upcoming features such as Chappaquiddick and Twelve.
Before entering the world of acting, Matt co-founded the Rude Mechanicals theater company in New York City, where he served as a leader for its 12-year run. The company produced works by renowned playwrights such as Vaclav Havel, William Shakespeare, and Samuel Beckett, as well as premiering pieces by Don DeLillo, Will Eno, Caryl Churchill, and Charles Mee Jr., among others. Additionally, Matt held the position of associate artistic director at Mile Square Theatre.
Throughout his stage career, Matt has received critical acclaim for his diverse range of roles, from the comically desperate (Malvolio in Twelfth Night, Shultz in Circle Mirror Transformation, Michael in Valparaiso, Simon in Our Town) to the dominant bully (Alan in God of Carnage, Hamm in Endgame, Robert in Betrayal),and everything in between. Notably, he portrayed over 25 characters in Craig Wright's The Pavilion, earning praise for his versatility and skill.
Prior to pursuing acting, Matt taught junior high at PS 171 in East Harlem, where he also served as the school's Dean of Discipline and coach of the Girl's Basketball team. He took his first acting class in the summer following his last year of teaching and later received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of the Holy Cross and currently resides in the New York City area with his wife and two daughters.
